Im Vordergund das Schiff Mainkuh. Das Schiff wurde ab 1886 über fünfzig Jahre lang als Kettendampfschiff auf dem Main eingesetzt und löste das mühsame Treideln (Ziehen von Schiffen flußaufwärts per Muskel- oder Pferdekraft) ab. Die Mainkuh zog sich mit Hilfe zweier gerillter Trommeln in der Schiffsmitte (angetrieben durch eine kohlenbefeuerte Dampfmaschine) an einer auf 396 km zwischen Frankfurt und Bamberg im Main verlegten Kette entlang (Würzburgwiki).
